KOLLAM – In a vibrant initiative to foster environmental consciousness and community spirit, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit No: 312 of Bishop Jerome Institute (BJI) successfully conducted a two-day Nature Camp at the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary on March 12 and 13, 2026.
The camp, organized in collaboration with the Natural Resources Protection Force (NRPF), provided students with a unique opportunity to step away from the traditional classroom setting and immerse themselves in the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats.
Key Highlights of the Camp
Eco-Awareness Sessions: Expert-led discussions on the importance of forest conservation and the protection of endangered species native to the Shendurney region.
Wildlife Exploration: Guided treks through the sanctuary allowed volunteers to observe local flora and fauna in their natural habitat.
Team Building: Under the glow of the evening campfire, students participated in group activities designed to strengthen the bonds of the NSS unit.
Sustainability Focus: The camp emphasized "Leave No Trace" principles, ensuring that all participants practiced responsible tourism and waste management.
Empowering Future Stewards
The initiative reflects Bishop Jerome Institute's ongoing commitment to social responsibility and environmental stewardship. By engaging with the sanctuary's delicate ecosystem, volunteers gained first-hand experience in the challenges of wildlife preservation and the vital role played by the Forest Department and NRPF.
"Nature is the best teacher. Through this camp, our volunteers haven't just learned about the environment; they’ve learned how to live in harmony with it," noted a unit representative.
