Most Rev. Dr. Stanley Roman is the 13th bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Quilon and the education chairman of K.C.B.C.
Stanley Roman was born on 4 June 1941 at Punalur in the Kollam district. He is the 10th of eleven children of Roman Fernandez and Elizabeth (7 boys and 4 girls). After his primary education at St. John’s L.P. School and Government U.P. School, Akkara at Punalur, he joined St. Raphael’s Minor Seminary at Kollam, where he was later to be Vice Rector, for his priestly studies and simultaneously completed his schooling from St. Aloysius School, Kollam.
In 1959 he joined St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Alwaye for the Philosophy course. After 2 years of Philosophy, he was chosen to pursue his priestly studies in Rome at the Pontifical Urban University, Rome. Here he secured his Master Degree in Philosophy and Theology. He was ordained priest by Cardinal Agagiani, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples at St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome on 16 December 1966. Back in Quilon, he was initially appointed as the Prefect of St.Rapheal’s Seminary.
He then continued his academics and secured M.A. (English Language and Literature) from the University of Kerala, as a Student of Fatima Mata College, Kollam (A prestigious Nationally accredited diocesan college), where he was later the Principal. After holding various posts in the Diocese, he was appointed the First Rector of Carmelgiri, Seminary when St, Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Alwaye was reorganized on the basis of Rites. He was nominated as the 13th Bishop of Quilon on 29 October 2001, while he was serving as the Rector of Carmelgiri Seminary. He was ordained Bishop of Quilon on 16 December 2001.
